Movies: Outdoor Cinemas – LA Summer 2016

Posted on by Rocky

It’s summertime, peeps! Which means it’s time to enjoy all the great outdoor activities that Los Angeles has to offer. The options are ENDLESS if you’re looking for something to do. However, if there are two things that we love the most over here in Hollywood, it’s the beautiful warm weather and movies. And while there’s DEFINITELY no shortage in theaters and cinemas here already; once the temperatures start to rise, so does the selection of venues to enjoy your favorite movie stars on the big screen. Whether you’re looking for the perfect date night under the stars, or a fun night with friends and family, there is a cinema and a movie that’s perfect for you!

Outdoor Movies – Los Angeles 2016

For a movie with a view, The Montalban Theatre hosts The Rooftop Film Club. Tickets for the month of June are already sold out, so be sure to get your tickets in advance for July ASAP. You don’t need to bring your own snacks or drinks to this venue, as they have a beverage bar and a snack bar there. Comfortable lounge chairs and blankets are provided, as well as wireless headphones for sound. General Admission is $17. Doors open at 6pm, and the movie starts at 8pm. Some of the movies playing are: Straight Outta Compton, The Notebook, Dirty Dancing, The Revenant, Dazed and Confused, and The Godfather

EAT/SEE/HEAR is Los Angeles’s premier outdoor movie, food truck, and live music series. Located at multiple locations all throughout Los Angeles every Saturday night, with an inflatible HD screen that is as tall as some of Malibu’s most prestigious mansions. Venues include The Autry Museum in Griffith Park, the North Hollywood Recreation Center, Santa Monica High School Amphitheatre, Centennial Square at Pasadena City Hall, and La Cienega Park in Beverly Hills. Tickets range from $5-$21. You bring your own lounge chairs, beach chairs, camping chairs, etc. and can bring your own food and beverage, however, you’ll probably want to indulge in some of Los Angeles’s best food trucks instead. Get there early to enjoy music played by up and coming local Los Angeles bands. And don’t forget your furry best friend, as these are dog friendly venues!

Street Food Cinema is Los Angeles’s largest outdoor movie series that also features tasty food trucks, live music, games, and more! It is in it’s fifth season and is located at multiple locations throughout the county. Culver City, Downtown, Eagle Rock, Manhattan Beach, Glendale, Pacific Palisades, Pasadena, Playa Vista, and West Hollywood. Movies play every Saturday night now through October 29th. Some of the known food trucks that you will find there will be Cousins Maine Lobster, India Jones, and The Pudding Truck. Dogs are welcome at all of these locations too! Some featured movies are Space Jam, Superbad, Jaws, Monsters Inc., and The Goonies.

Lastly, but certainly not least, my favorite venue of them all, Cinespia at the Hollywood Forever Cemetery. It’s one of the world’s most compelling landmarks, known for being the resting place to more of Hollywood’s founders and stars than any other place on earth, and a favorite tourist attraction. Once you park, you can take a stroll on the sidewalks to see where some of your favorite old Hollywood stars rest in peace, then head to the Fairbanks Lawn, where you’ll set up your chairs and blankets and enjoy music spinning by a local DJ while waiting for the movie to start after sunset. Pack your own picnic for this one, as there are no local vendors available here. Some of the featured films playing this summer are Singing in the Rain, ET, Mean Girls, Goodfellas, and the season finale, Grease (with fireworks to conclude).

Now that I’ve taken the liberty of doing all of the research for you, bundle up, pack your picnics, get your tickets, and go! Happy Summertime!
