THE WHO HITS 50! @ Staples Center

THE WHO have sold over 100 million records since forming in 1964; they brought together four different personalities and in effect produced a musical hurricane. Each of them was a pioneer. Wildman drummer Keith Moon beat his kit with a chaotic elegance; stoic bassist John Entwistle held down the center with the melodic virtuosity of a solo guitarist; raging intellectual Pete Townshend punctuated the epic universality of his songs with the windmill slamming of his fingers across his guitar strings; and Roger Daltrey roared above it all with an impossibly virile macho swagger. They exploded conventional rhythm and blues structures, challenged pop music conventions, and redefined what was possible on stage, in the recording studio, and on vinyl. As they enter their 50th year, the band is still going strong, winning rave reviews.

Macklemore & Ryan Lewis Concert @ Shrine Auditorium & Expo Hall

To be Macklemore & Ryan Lewis is to be scrutinized ceaselessly. The most consequential white hip-hop act since Eminem, this Seattle duo became a pop sensation, hip-hop curio and sociocultural lightning rod in 2012 on the back of the quirky breakthrough “Thrift Shop.” The boisterous and off-kilter track turned out to be the first in a string of four Billboard top 15 hits, two of which went to No. 1.

The success of the rapper Macklemore (born Ben Haggerty) and Mr. Lewis, a producer, was a reflection of the diffusion of hip-hop’s center, and the reach of its outer limits — here was a hip-hop group preoccupied with anti-ostentation and marriage equality, a combination that proved palatable to white audiences, which gobbled up the duo’s music, helping make its debut album, “The Heist,” go platinum.

Hollywood Fringe @ Various Locations in LA

The Hollywood Fringe Festival is an annual, open-access, community-derived event celebrating freedom of expression and collaboration in the performing arts community. Each June during the Hollywood Fringe, the arts infiltrate the Hollywood neighborhood: fully equipped theaters, parks, clubs, churches, restaurants and other unexpected places host hundreds of productions by local, national, and international arts companies and independent performers.

Participation in the Hollywood Fringe is completely open and uncensored. This free-for-all approach underlines the festival’s mission to be a platform for artists without the barrier of a curative body. By opening the gates to anyone with a vision, the festival is able to exhibit the most diverse and cutting-edge points-of-view the world has to offer. Additionally, by creating an environment where artists must self-produce their work, the Fringe motivates its participants to cultivate a spirit of entrepreneurialism in the arts.
